WFI Selected to Provide Wi-Fi Network Infrastructure Services for City of Temecula, California
SAN DIEGO, Nov 09, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Wireless Facilities, Inc. (WFI) (Nasdaq: WFII), a global leader in the design, deployment, and management of wireless communication networks, technology networks and security systems, announced today that it has been selected to provide network design and deployment services for the City of Temecula's proposed municipal Wi-Fi network. Working together with Wi-Fi mesh network company Tropos Networks, and in coordination with The City of Temecula, WFI will deploy a Wi-Fi network in the Old Town area of the city. The network is expected to be deployed in the first quarter of 2006. Further terms of the project were not disclosed.
"Temecula is an example of another city that has selected to WFI to provide broadband access to its citizens," said Eric DeMarco, President and CEO of WFI. "We have been focused on the municipal space for over a year now, and our determination is now yielding new business. These cities recognize the unique value WFI offers -- a powerful combination of network deployment expertise, systems integration, and public safety and municipal solutions -- and we expect to see more of these deals in the near future."
"We are happy to be working with a leading network deployment partner like WFI on our city's municipal Wi-Fi project," said Temecula Councilman Chuck Washington. "WFI has years of experience delivering high-quality, reliable networks for major wireless carriers, and we are confident they are the right company to assist us with building a high-tech communications infrastructure in the Old Town area of our city. Working together with the Redevelopment Agency, we believe this initiative will help attract businesses and tourism into Temecula, and will further our city's reputation as an innovative, high- tech community."
For the project, WFI will be implementing a metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh network architecture by Sunnyvale, CA-based Tropos Networks. WFI will design and deploy the Tropos Wi-Fi network with mesh routers that form a self-configuring wireless broadband data network to efficiently hand off data, provide backhaul services, and adapt to any interference. In addition to the Old Town area of Temecula, City workers, fire and police department vehicles with Wi-Fi enabled data terminals will also benefit from this network. These employees and local merchants will have broadband access to applications that they previously could only use from fixed locations or desktop devices. Police would have access to California State databases and the Fire Department would gain access to the County computer aided dispatch (CAD) system. City inspectors and code enforcement officials could also benefit from the ability to access community development databases and the City's records management systems (RMS)
Municipal Wi-Fi and mesh networks are playing an increasingly important role in WFI's business. Recently, the Company announced it joined with Google in a bid to provide Wi-Fi services in the City of San Francisco, and the Company announced it was selected by the City of Madison, Wisconsin for its municipal Wi-Fi network.
"We are actively involved with other municipal Wi-Fi projects and expect to be successful in winning additional work," concluded DeMarco.
