Kratos Awarded $2.3 Million Department of Education Contract to Build National Network Portal for Language Educators
SAN DIEGO, Aug 2, 2010 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX News Network) -- Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq:KTOS), a leading National Security Solutions provider, announced today that its Workforce Learning and Performance Division has been awarded a new contract with the U.S. Department of Education to develop a National Adult English Language Learning Professional Development Network. The network will seek to improve the overall quality of adult English language instruction by enhancing the professional development of teachers. The contract is expected to be performed over a three year period, with a total expected contract value of approximately $2.3 million. Kratos has received the first year's funding under the award.
Kratos will build and maintain the English Language Learning University (ELL University) as an innovative, accessible, affordable, easy-to-use, and research-based online learning portal to disseminate targeted professional development materials for ELL instruction. The ELL University will mirror a traditional college campus, providing all ELL teachers with access to a team of expert faculty members, academic departments and other practical resources aligned to their individual needs. Additional features will include faculty office hours, learning clubs, course catalogues, class registration and campus life activities to provide a simulated university experience.
Recently, data from the National Reporting System (NRS) for Adult Education indicated a significant need for high-quality adult English language instruction services. During the 2007-2008 program year, English Language Learners (ELLs) enrolled in English as a second language. Classes represented nearly half (46 percent) of all adult basic education and literacy enrollments.
"Kratos is proud once again to support the Department of Education," said Kristine Nowicki, Director of Kratos' Civilian Services team. "We will apply our eLearning, Web 2.0, strategic communications and technical skills to see that ELL University serves the Department's goals of providing professional development opportunities and resources for strengthening instruction and ultimately improving student outcomes."
Kratos' subsidiary, DTI, has a successful 14-year relationship with the Department of Education, having served agencies, including the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, the Office of Vocational and Adult Education, and the Office of Postsecondary Education. Kratos has supported numerous initiatives including the National School-to-Work Office, the Smaller Learning Communities Program, America's Career Resource Network, Student Achievement in Reading (STAR) and Policy to Performance, the Adult Basic Education to Postsecondary Education initiative.
